Modernization
Our country's name sucks. Brief history lesson, Ruy Lopez de Villalobos named the country "Philippines" in honor of the King of Spain back then, King Philip III. That was like 2000 years ago. Face it, right now, no one in Spain gives a rat's ass about a third world country named after a long dead king. And besides, why the hell should we let a dayuhan name OUR country?
We should change the country's name to something that has much more appeal, like Fluffylandia. With that kickass name, tourism will skyrocket! Then we change our currency from peso to fluffs and put rabbits on our coins and bills.
National anthems are supposed to inspire patriotisim and nationalism. But face it, the tune is so 1890's. Instead of inspiring the said attributes, the national anthem is so damn boring that it is reduced to a formality in schools, goverment, and radio stations before signing off. No offense to the heroes who fought for our freedom, I salute you all. All I'm saying is that in order to connect with the current generation, there are a couple of alternatives we need to consider:
1.) Remix the Lupang Hinirang. Add in some funky beat, put in a rap by Francis Magalona in there somewhere, or some "artistic screaming" by Slapshock.
2.) Change the national anthem completely. There are a bunch of "We love Phlippines" themes that came up recently. Noypi is a good choice, so is Liwanag sa Dilim. P.S. I don't like the Pinoy Big Brother theme. Orange and Lemons = yuck.
3.) Who said that national anthems have to be about the country? If you want one song that almost everybody Filipino can relate to, and is being played at least once every five minutes, it's got to be Bonnie Bailey's Ever After!
We might as well change some of our out-of-date national symbols as well.
Instead of mango, the national fruit will now be:

Wildly popular Ice Monster stuff
Barong Tagalog won't be the national outfit for men anymore, it will now be:

Anything + Lance Armstrong Bands
The national dance, which I'm pretty sure what it is, will be change to:

First day funk ><;; BTW, the official national dance is carinosa. Did anybody remember their Hekasi/Civic Studies? XD
The national sport will no longer be sipa. The sipa fad died during my elementary days. The new one will be:

MMORPG's, specifically Ragnarok Online. People think up of more strategies for these games than chess.
The national hero. Dr Rizal? Nope.

Darna.
And lastly, the national leaf, which is..... ha! you don't know, do you? It's Anahaw. But it should be changed to..
Oh shit, error in photobucket.... ><;; Oh well. I guess that's it.

hehehe i was actually thinking of the importance of having national things... the only reason i can think of is sentimental value and probably national identity? it's actually peculiar... the way they chose these symbols (eg barong tagalog - having see through materials so that the colonizers can see if Filipinos are armed) and the way they keep on changing them (nat'l dance: from tinikling to carinosa) but i don't know... i don't think these symbols serve any purpose at all... aside from being tools used by teachers to help kids learn how to memorize stuff /gg
Sentimental value, perhaps. But we all know what happens if we cling to the past too much..
As for national identity, you do raise a valid point. However, the concept of a national identity fail in the Philippines because, as written by some Korean dude in a heavily forwarded email, Filipinos have no sense of nation as compared other Asian nations like Japan and Korea. Without a sense of nation, national symbols serve no purpose at all.
So, I agree, national symbols have become reduced to topics that needs to be memorized by kids and, if the teacher is sadistic enough, the kids will be required to draw these symbols on 1/4 cartolinas. Woe to those kids who can't draw very well.. (i.e. me)
ano dapat ung leaf? marijuana leaf? haha!
pfft.... no need to modernize this god forsaken country!!!
everybody should migrate to Michaelandia! the country with the coolest national anthem!
I think my national dance should be the "numa numa dance"... haven't heard of it? search mo...super funny.
wakekeke.... kulit!
The Philippines was named 400 years ago. Not 2000 years as you suggest.
It was named "Felipinas" in honor of Prince Phillip of Spain. It was changed to Philippines because the stupid Americans can't pronounce Spanish names.
And coincidentally, I did know that the national dance is the Carinosa and the national leaf is the Anahaw. Ano pa ba? National Animal? Carabao. National Flower? Gumamela. National Bird? Philippine Eagle. National Past time? Pinoy Big Brother
know it all huh?
national flower is sampaguita XD
trust me on this. its gumamela. i remember my grade 1 lessons.
I am always right!

wtf???
google spam? wtf?? :)
Having national symbol is actually telling us what we are. NAtional symbols are in fact mirror images of things we hold dear. Ganito, ano madaling alalahanin, (affection, devotion, simplicity, beauty and fidelity) or (sampaguita). If you think we are a thing of the past or that we have to be written in 1/4 cartolina following a sadistic teacher, or our national house be changed to condominium houses, then many of us are (sadly) missing the point.
